Can’t wait to share with you today this incredibly charming and elegantly casual teal and yellow wedding. This color palette combination has been a huge hit in the past, so I wanted to feature this little gem with the hopes you would find lots of steal-worthy ideas to use for your own big day. And if you’re on a tight budget (like this cute couple), you’re bound to be inspired by their incredible DIY (just check out the lovely handmade paper centerpieces!). The wedding took place at the The Rose Room in Boise, Idaho and was sent to us by Nack Photography who snapped a bunch of stylish pics that will stand the test of time. Totally relaxed, incredibly sweet and beautifully stylish – we just love that!

What was the vision for your wedding?
Our vision was a fun, casual wedding where we could be ourselves and celebrate with our closest friends and relatives.
What was the size & budget of your wedding?
We had around 90 guests and spent around $9,500.
Cceremony & Reception
We had only two absolute requirements when it came to location: the ceremony and reception needed to be in the same space and we had to be able to party later than 10 p.m. The Rose Rose was our only viable option that wasn’t outrageously expensive. I could have done without ceilings painted a rosy pink, but having a smooth wedding is all about compromise.
Your Bridal Style
I went with a simple chiffon dress with a sweetheart neckline. I found my dress (on sale!) at my first visit to David’s Bridal. The dress originally had a flowery strap that I chose to eliminate on a whim on my way to my first fitting. Go with your gut. Don’t overthink! I knew I wanted to wear flats (who wants to suffer on your wedding day?), so I went with hot pink crocheted Tom’s. I didn’t realize how much they would poke out from under my dress, but they were a fun touch. The only thing I regret is the feeling of elegance you get when you walk in high heels with a beautiful dress on. Oh well! My accessories were simple, my “something blue”/”something borrowed” was a blue-diamond ring of my sister’s that’s been in our family for generations and my earrings I got from Etsy.
Bridesmaids & Flower Girl
My girls got their dresses from RentTheRunway.com – a great inexpensive option – and I let them pick out which style of dress they wanted to wear. Our flower girl (my niece) wore her favorite white dress and added a grey sash for a bit of flair.
Groom’s Attire
Mike wanted to keep things casual so he ditched the formal tux and went with dress pants and a vest from Express Men. All the groomsmen wore matching grey chambray Vans. I handmade their ties in coordinating teal fabrics.
Decorations
Mike and I handmade thousands of paper flowers for the centerpiece decorations. We also spent months gathering glass jars to be used as vases. Our goal was to be thrifty as well as “green”. After the wedding was over we had very little to throw away. Even the fabric-strip ceremony backdrop was re-purposed into a quilt!
Bouquets
My bridesmaids and I did carry real flowers — nothing compares! I asked my talented florist-friend for monochromatic bouquets without much fuss. Our style was more streamlined modern than soft and romantic.
Wedding Cake
Mike’s step-grandma insisted on baking cakes for the big day. I believe we had 7 different cakes, all from family recipes. She even traveled to Boise from Chicago and had several undecorated cakes with her in her carry on!
Favors
We kept things simple. No favors. Please don’t hate us!
Did you include any DIY or personalized details?
Nearly every detail of our wedding we did ourselves — from the invitation design through the decorations. We did as much “in-house” as possible.
Did you include anything unique? Tell us about the bridesmaids hockey playing?
To explain the hockey — Mike’s little brother is a serious AAA hockey player and his basement was custom-built for his training. The rehearsal dinner was at Mike’s parents house and our friends played several rowdy games of hockey down there. My bridesmaids somehow missed out on the fun the day before and couldn’t resist taking a quick trip to the basement to shoot some pucks before we left to take photos.
Did you find anything challenging?
It was challenging to keep things simple. When you first start planning your wedding, Pinterest and wedding blogs are great sources of inspiration, but they can also overload you with things you feel you HAVE to have at your wedding. There was a point where I had to accept that my time and resources wouldn’t allow me to have a wedding like those I was seeing online. But the trick is that you still CAN have a “blog-worthy” wedding without all the bells and whistles. I found it better to set my top three priorities and do those things really well rather than struggle to hit my entire wish list. Your guests will notice what you do have at your wedding, not the things you don’t. So let go of what isn’t absolutely essential.
Tell us about the stand-out moments?
After reading my vows, I desperately needed a tissue. I was a mess. I turned around mid-laugh/cry and accidentally snot rocketed behind me. Only the groomsmen could see what happened, which they found hilarious. Luckily no one else saw and it remains a moment that only we shared. And now you know.
- My sister gave an amazing speech that I’ll never forget.
- Dancing with my dad. He’s a better dancer than I am and I had a hard time keeping up! It was a very special moment for me.
- Dancing with our friends was the most fun — we had our venue until 2 a.m. and we carefully planned out our playlist to hear all of favorites.
Your advice to Bride’s & Groom’s planning now?
Designate someone who will coordinate all final day-of details. Being a control-freak, I never gave up the role of ring-master on the day of the wedding and found myself unnecessarily stressed the morning of. Let someone else stress about your makeup artist showing up late, or wonder where the hell your officiant is just minutes before the start of the ceremony. Things will never go exactly according to plan, so improvise and be adaptable.
