We’re totally smitten with this next dose of inspiration. If you’re a fan of the old 1993 Johnny Depp movie ‘Benny and Joon‘ then hold on to your hats, because this styled shoot by the creative Elizabeth Zuluaga is nothing short of dreamy. Not only does it feature a Milk Bar shoot with plenty of fun and quirky appeal (just think cute E session inspo guys!), but also a beautiful riverside wedding styled shoot with gorgeous vintage styling, breathtaking natural light and a stunning up-do I totally have to try! Dive right in and lap up the lovely.
Photographer Elizabeth shares her inspiration: I had been wanting to do a styled shoot for quite some time and seeing as how Benny and Joon is one of my favorite movies, it isn’t hard to see where the inspiration came from. It all began three months ago when I was reorganizing some things at home and came across one of my favorite movies, Benny and Joon. Later that day I took a shower, got dressed and whilst blow drying my hair it hit me. A Benny and Joon inspired wedding shoot! I thought, what would it look like if Benny and Joon got married? What would they wear? What would their story look like if the movie just kept going? I wanted to do two looks in order to showcase the diner scene in the movie and of course, their “wedding day.
Everything models Adam and Jennifer wore was picked out carefully from head to toe by yours truly and my wonderful hair/makeup stylist, Michelle Graves. Earrings, suspenders, shoes, even Jennifer’s socks! I would also like to point out that the wedding dress is vintage from the 1950s. So much of the film is about Sam’s eccentric style and Joon’s simple taste, so I worked diligently with my makeup/hair artist to recreate the look and feel of the characters, but also keep it a bit modern as well (with a little Liz flair). I made sure every accessory, sock/shoe and hair placement was whimsical, but with a slight edge. I wanted to be true to the film itself as well, but with a calm, beautiful approach in the posing, mannerisms and chemistry between the models.
I would have to say my favorite moment of the day was near the end of the shoot when the light was almost gone. We kept chasing the light, laughing, and running trying to get the perfect shot. I finally found this lovely little spot which was canopied by trees with a beautiful opening of the sky. This is where I shot them sitting down and Adam kissing Jen’s forehead, which turned out to be my favorite images of the day.
